Mont-Royal Metro Tragedy Today: Montreal Mourns After Man Dies by Suicide

Montreal, QC — A tragic incident unfolded today at the Mont-Royal Metro station, where a man died by suicide after reportedly jumping from the platform onto the tracks.

The event occurred during the morning commute, prompting a swift response from emergency services and causing disruptions across the Orange Line of the STM network.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

According to initial reports from witnesses and Montreal transit authorities, the man appeared to intentionally jump in front of an oncoming train shortly before 9 a.m.

The train operator was unable to stop in time. Emergency personnel, including paramedics, firefighters, and police, were dispatched to the scene almost immediately. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead on site.

The identity of the man has not been released, and authorities have yet to confirm whether a suicide note was found or if there were any prior signs of distress. STM spokespersons have stated that security footage is currently under review and that a formal investigation has been launched to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Service on the Orange Line between Berri-UQAM and Laurier stations was temporarily suspended as first responders worked at the scene and transit workers assessed the damage and cleared the area. Shuttle buses were deployed to help stranded commuters, and normal metro operations resumed later in the day, though residual delays continued for some time.

Witnesses at the station expressed shock and sadness. “It happened so fast,” said one commuter who was standing on the opposite platform. “People were screaming and panicking. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Another passenger noted that mental health support should be made more visible in public spaces. “We need more awareness and resources. It’s heartbreaking that someone felt this was their only option.”

This tragedy adds to a growing concern about suicides in the Montreal Metro system. While the STM has taken steps in recent years to increase mental health awareness, install surveillance cameras, and train employees to respond to crises, incidents like today’s serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing mental health challenges faced by individuals across the city.

Crisis response teams, including mental health professionals, were made available to metro employees and witnesses affected by the event. The STM also reminded the public that anyone struggling with mental health issues can seek support by calling 1-866-APPELLE (1-866-277-3553), Quebec’s 24/7 suicide prevention helpline.

As the city processes today’s tragic event, community leaders and mental health advocates are once again calling for expanded services, education, and outreach programs to help prevent future suicides and offer hope to those who may be suffering in silence.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or professional. You are not alone, and help is available.
