Accident on I-495 Today Causes Major Traffic Delays and Sparks Safety Concerns

A serious accident occurred earlier today on Interstate 495, resulting in significant traffic disruptions and prompting renewed concerns about highway safety.

The crash took place in the early morning hours, just after 7:30 a.m., near Exit 33, affecting the northbound lanes of the highway. According to authorities, the incident involved multiple vehicles, including a large commercial truck and at least two passenger cars.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

Eyewitnesses report that the collision appeared to have been triggered by sudden braking in heavy traffic, which led to a chain-reaction crash. The tractor-trailer reportedly jackknifed across two lanes, striking a sedan and an SUV in the process.

Emergency responders from local fire departments, EMS, and state police quickly arrived on the scene to provide medical assistance and manage traffic. Several individuals sustained injuries in the crash, including two people who were transported to nearby hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Others were treated at the scene for minor injuries such as bruises and whiplash. Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved, as investigations are still underway and family members are being notified.

The accident caused severe congestion along I-495 for several hours, with traffic backed up for nearly 10 miles by mid-morning. Commuters were advised to avoid the area or seek alternative routes via Route 3 or Route 128. By 11:45 a.m., all lanes had been reopened, although residual delays continued well into the early afternoon.

Massachusetts State Police are currently investigating the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that slippery road conditions due to early morning drizzle may have played a role, as well as excessive speed on the part of one of the drivers.

Officers on the scene collected witness statements and are reviewing dashcam footage from several vehicles involved. The truck driver has been cooperative, and no citations have been issued at this time.

This incident adds to a growing list of traffic accidents on I-495, a notoriously busy highway that serves as a major commuter corridor in the Greater Boston area.

Local residents and transportation advocates have called for increased safety measures, including more visible signage, improved lighting, and stricter enforcement of speed limits in high-traffic zones.

In response to today’s crash, several state legislators have reiterated their calls for infrastructure improvements along I-495. “We can’t continue to allow these preventable accidents to happen,” said State Representative Kelly Adams. “It’s time to invest in real safety upgrades before another life is lost.”

Drivers are reminded to exercise caution, especially during peak commuting hours and in inclement weather. Authorities continue to urge all motorists to obey posted speed limits, maintain safe following distances, and stay alert behind the wheel.

Further updates on the investigation and the condition of those injured are expected to be released later this week. Anyone with additional information about the accident is encouraged to contact the Massachusetts State Police.
